5/2/2016 – We use our ICP for ORGANIC sample analysis. How do you recommend for us to clean our torches.
Response From Texas Scientific Products: Carbon build up around and at the tip of the torch injector as well as discoloration of the outer shield of the torch is normal when measuring organic samples. The discoloration is "cosmetic" and should not affect the performance of the ICP. Carbon build-up, on the other hand, should be removed as it potentially could affect performance. Generally, soaking the torch and or injectors in 20-50% Nitric Acid should be done periodically to get rid of oily deposits and cross contamination, but will not have any effect on Carbon build-up. Carbon build-up can be removed by placing the torch in a muffle furnace (if available). Minimally, the temperature should be 600 Deg C or more, and the torch should be baked for about an hour. At this temperature carbon will be "burned" off or oxidized.Sonication can cause the breakdown (cracking) of the quartz, so we do not recommend this.TSP offers both cleaning and repair (replacing of the outer shield) programs that dramatically extend the life expectancy and replacement cost for torches.
